Where Bread is King.
A little over 8 years ago we had the crazy idea to pack our bags, move home from the UK and teach bread courses on a West Cork Island.
Never did we think when we open our doors for that very first course in June 2012 that it would be the start what has been an amazing, sometime wild journey. Never did we think it would lead us to where we are today. From a bread course on Heir island has come a thriving cafe in Delgany, Wicklow, and a wholesale business that supplies cafes and restaurants throughout Wicklow and Dublin.
The last 8 years have been a whirlwind and this year looks like it wilL be no different as we plan to open a second cafe this year.
On top of that we are very excited to announce the opening of our new bread school at our bakery in Newtownmountkennedy. We have been working on this for sometime and cannot wait to share this space with you.
Having partnered with Siemens and Kenwood we have able to create the prefect space to knead, roll and bake.
Overlooking our bakery in Wicklow, a bread course at our new bread school we give a behind the scenes look inside a modern Irish bakery.
From our new bread school we will be offering full day courses, half day courses, specialty courses as well as some exciting collaborations with a few of our favourite foodie friends.
This year we will be really focusing on offering you the best baking experience we can from our new bread school as a result we wont be running any courses on Heir island this year, however we do hope to return to Heir island in late 2021.In the meantime we cannot wait to welcome you to our new bread school.
Have you ever wondered what the windowpane effect is or what knocking back involves? Well this is the place to find out. Soda breads, yeasted loaves, savoury snacks and sweet treats, together we will make them all.
Whether you are a beginner, experienced home baker or simply a food lover our one day courses aim to take the fear out of bread making and return bread to its rightful place as ‘King of the Table’.
The Firehouse Bakery is run by chef and baker Patrick Ryan, co-author of ‘Bread Revolution’ and as seen on BBC 2’s Big Bread Experiment. Since opening the bread school in June 2012, Patrick has caught the nations imagination and wants to share his passion for great food with you.
